The Myth of Multi-Tasking: Why Doing It All Leaves You With Nothing

 

Ever feel like you’re doing everything but not really getting anywhere?

I used to think that the more I multi-tasked, the more productive I was. As a caregiver and entrepreneur, my days are packed—appointments to schedule, meals to prepare, work deadlines to meet. There’s always something demanding my attention. Slowing down felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford.

But here’s what I’ve learned: multi-tasking gives the illusion of productivity while robbing me of peace.

I caught myself the other day, rushing through the motions—checking my phone while eating, mentally listing my next five tasks while halfway listening to a conversation. I wasn’t fully present. I wasn’t fully anywhere.

So, I decided to pause. Just for a moment.

I took a deep breath. Closed my eyes. Put the phone down. And for the first time that day, I felt myself settle.

It didn’t change my to-do list, but it changed me. That one small act of stillness created space—for clarity, for presence, for a moment of peace before diving back in.

Why Multi-Tasking Leaves No Room for What Matters

The truth is, multi-tasking isn’t just about doing multiple things at once—it’s about never fully being in any one place. It pulls your energy in different directions, making it harder to focus, connect, and truly be in the moment.

Here’s what I’ve noticed in my own life:

The To-Do List Never Feels “Done” – No matter how much I check off, I still feel behind because my brain is already jumping ahead to the next thing.

More Stress, Less Progress – Juggling too much makes me feel busy, but at the end of the day, I struggle to remember what I actually accomplished.

Lack of Presence in the Little Moments – I find myself halfway listening in conversations, rushing through meals, and feeling disconnected from the people around me.

Burnout Sneaks Up Fast – Always being “on” and doing multiple things at once leaves little room for rest and reflection. Before I know it, exhaustion sets in.

What If We Chose Stillness Instead?

For many caregivers, multi-tasking is a way of life. Sometimes, it’s unavoidable. But what if we balanced it with intentional moments of stillness?

✨ A deep breath before moving to the next task.
✨ Five minutes of quiet before the house wakes up.
✨ Simply drinking your coffee without distractions.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Even tiny moments of stillness add up.

This Lenten season (which began on March 5 and ends on April 13), I’ve committed to letting go of the need to control everything. I’m making space for rest, renewal, and what truly matters. Maybe spirituality isn’t your path, but I believe we all have things that no longer serve us—things we hold onto out of habit rather than necessity.

Maybe this is the month you decide to change how you approach what matters most to you.
